Autumn Gratitudes
There is so much to be thankful for in every season, and in every dark circumstance we can find the light in God’s goodness towards us manifested in everything from food, shelter, and friendship to weather, energy, or strength.
This month, I want to highlight a few tools I use to practice gratitude daily.
Tools:
The 5-Minute Journal
Prayer outdoors
Photos
The 5-Minute Journal is a quick, efficient way to log and track your practice of gratitude in the mornings and/or evenings. You can use the hardcover journal or download the app to get started. I love being able to quickly synopsize the day and my gratitudes, as well as track my progress in intentionally practicing gratitude over weeks and months.
Prayer outdoors is one of my favorite ways to practice gratitude. Getting outside of man-made buildings and standing among the trees in the forest or perhaps taking a walk and observing the mountains in the distance all help shift my focus from earthly concerns to eternal realities. Try just stepping out for a 5-minute walk each day and thanking God for those things which have brought you delight today.
Finally, photos are a powerful way to express gratitude. I once heard someone say that we take photos of what we don’t want to lose. Have you ever scrolled back in your photo roll and felt a wash of delight and gratitude for what God has given to you? Try taking photos of things that bring you delight today - be it your coffee, luncheon with a friend or your spouse, your favorite dress, or even a room in your house you particularly enjoy.
Happy Autumn!
